Phyllis Handal

Handpainted Earthenware

"My pottery is the result of a lifelong love for working with clay. I earned an MFA in Ceramics, and traveled to China to work in a replicated Ming Dynasty Pottery. It was there that I came to appreciate the tradition of the painted pot."

Phyllis Handal spoke to the Creative Arts Center in 2002 as a panelist of ceramic artists who had participated in the West Virginia Universtiy China exchange program. Handal shared stories of the inspiration gained from her travel to Changhai and Nanjing and the influences on her work.

She has been exploring the use of new brush strokes on her ceramics which she describes as “fluid as writing.”  Of her trip to China and the artists she met, Handal said, “Not only were the works of art inspiring, but the language, the people, the pottery and the countryside all will stay with me and in my art.”
